No key, no sign-up. The root path returns plain text to anything that is not a browser, so it drops straight into a shell — over HTTP or HTTPS, whichever you reach for.

What this page is telling you

    What is an IP address?

Your IP address is the number every server you contact uses to send answers back to you. You do not choose it — your internet provider assigns it, and it travels with every request your device makes. The address at the top of this page is the one the rest of the internet sees, which is not necessarily the one your own device thinks it has: home routers and mobile networks usually put many devices behind a single public address.

What is an ASN, and what is an ISP?

An Autonomous System Number identifies the network that announces your address to the rest of the internet — a provider, a university, a hosting company. The ISP name shown here is the organisation registered to that ASN. The network prefix is the whole block your address sits inside, which is what other networks actually route traffic towards. Together they say far more about where you are connecting from than the single address does.

    Why is my location wrong?

IP geolocation is an educated guess, never a measurement. It works by mapping address blocks to the places their owners say they serve, so it lands on the city your provider routes you through rather than the room you are sitting in. Mobile networks, business connections and anything behind a VPN routinely come out tens or hundreds of kilometres off. Treat the city as a hint and the country as fairly reliable.

Does a VPN or proxy hide all of this?

It replaces the address, which is the biggest part. Everything else on this page still describes you: your browser reports its own time zone, language and screen size, and those can contradict the location your new IP address claims. The exposure checks above flag exactly that kind of mismatch, because it is what a site looking for VPN users checks first.

    What is IPv4 and IPv6?

IPv4 addresses look like 135.181.196.162 and ran out years ago; IPv6 addresses look like 2a01:4f9:c010:abcd::1 and exist because of it. Most connections still work over both. Testing which ones you have needs two hostnames that each answer on only one protocol, which is what v4.ipchk.ai is for.

Can I use this from a script?

That is what it is for. Every endpoint answers plain text or JSON without a key, a sign-up or a rate-limit tier, and the root path detects non-browser clients and skips the HTML entirely — so curl ipchk.ai gives you a readable report and curl ipchk.ai/ip gives you something you can assign to a shell variable. Port 80 answers command-line clients directly so the bare hostname just works; browsers are sent to HTTPS.
